Range of Light: Landscapes from Near and Far

April 1 - April 30

For the month of April, Gallery North is proud to present “Range of Light: Landscapes from Near and Far”, by oil painter Ben Groff, together with ceramic animal sculptures by Cyndi Brown. Running from April 1-30, the exhibit is open to the public daily from 11-5.

Ben Groff’s popular landscapes have been a feature of Gallery North for several years. Noted for his evocative use of light and shadow, Groff believes that “realism must never be an end in itself; rather the brush must adapt itself to the object and the object to the brush so that a deeper sense of the reality of the scene can emerge.”

“Groff’s landscapes seem dipped in the space between reality and gossamer-fantasy,” according to visitedmonds.com — a unique blend of realism and dreamlike sensation. Though predominantly an artist of the Cascades, many other paintings in this exhibit will show images from his travels around the world. In every image his overriding concern is “to capture a moment of light that seems to transform the world into a sudden stillness infused with spirit.”

Cyndi Brown is a lifelong artist who eight years ago discovered the perfect medium — clay sculpting. She loves working with clay and finds it challenging, fascinating and forgiving. Each sculpture she creates is uniquely hand-built, bisque fired, and then carefully hand painted to create a sense of realism and personality. The process of creating sculpture is very organic, and Cyndi allows the element of chance to influence the final posture and attitude of each sculpture. Every piece made is completely hand-crafted and one of a kind.

Her deep admiration and fascination with the unique beauty, dignity and humor of all animals is the inspiration for her work, as she celebrates the special affinity and bond that exists between humans and animals.

Cyndi is also a working Certified American Sign Language Interpreter. Over the years she has completed coursework in drawing, painting, pastel and sculpture at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, and several other universities. Her years of experience in the field of American Sign Language as an interpreter encouraged a keen attentiveness to non-verbal communication. She strives to apply those visual skills to communicate the essence of each animal that is created with clay.

There will be a “Meet the Artist” reception on Saturday, April 2nd from 1-4, and during Art Walk on April 21 from 5-8 pm.
