Edmonds, WA – The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCG Auxiliary) will be holding the Northern Area meeting on Saturday, May 31st at the Edmonds Harbor Inn located at 130 W. Dayton St, Edmonds, WA 98020. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard and supports the Coast Guard in nearly all mission areas. Special thanks to the Edmonds community for supporting this event including the Best Western, Compass Courses and Port of Edmonds.
As part of this meeting, the USCG Auxiliary will offer Free Vessel safety checks in the afternoon at the Edmonds Marina. The inspections are open to all recreational boat types under 65 feet, including stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, personal watercraft, and power boats.
Vessel Examiners will talk with boaters about the purpose of marine safety equipment, and discuss certain safety practices. Some topics discussed include: survival tips, life jackets, boat fuel management, interpreting sea conditions and how to report accidents. Your examiner is also available to clarify various federal and state regulations for boating in your area.
There is a focus on wearing life jackets. The U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three out of every four recreational boating fatalities in 2023, and that 87 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. New life jackets are more comfortable, lightweight, and stylish with many options. Wearing a life jacket saves lives.
